Connecting your PAT Tester to your computer using a compatible 9 Pin Serial Cable only.

This guide will show you how to connect your PAT Tester to your computer using a compatible 9 Pin Serial to 9 Pin Serial Cable, please click here if you are also using a USB to Serial Converter.

We will assume that you already using a correctly wired and compatible 9 Pin Serial Cable for the type of PAT Tester you are using.

The image below shows a Serial Cable.

Each end is numbered for easily identification.

If your computer has what we refer to as a physical 9 Pin Serial Port, this will normally be situated on the rear panel of the computer.

Do not confuse this with a Video/Monitor VGA Socket, which is Female, normally blue in colour and has 15 Pins (see image below).

Your Serial Cable should have at least one Female end, this needs to be securely connected to the Male Serial Connector on your computer (as shown in the image below).

The other end of the Serial Cable will need to be securely fitted to the Serial Connector on your PAT Tester (as shown in the image below).

Some PAT Testers have more than one Serial Connector, make sure you connect it to the correct one normally labelled PC / Printer / Serial IO.

This guide will show you how to connect your PAT Tester to your computer using a compatible 9 Pin Serial to 9 Pin Serial Cable and USB to Serial Converter.

We will assume that you already using a correctly wired and compatible 9 Pin Serial Cable for the type of PAT Tester you are using and that you are using a recommended and supported USB to Serial Converter.

The image below shows a Serial Cable and USB to Serial Converter.  Each end is numbered for easily identification.

Your Serial Cable should have at least one Female end, this needs to be securely connected to the Male Serial Connector on the USB to Serial Converter (as shown in the image above, numbers 3 and 2).

The USB connector will need to be connected to a USB socket on your computer (as shown below).

You will also need to install drivers for the USB to Serial Converter if this has not already been done; these will normally be provided on CD or be installed automatically depending on your Operating System.

The remaining end of the Serial Cable needs to be securely fitted to the Serial Connector on your PAT Tester (as shown in the image below).

Some PAT Testers have more than one Serial Connector, make sure you connect it to the correct one normally labelled PC / Printer / Serial IO.
